Hi all! Sorry I've neglected the forums for so long.

I got this from a friend I made during Summer Seminar at the ANA. I took a close look today, and saw there was a divide in the hologram. At first I thought it was a fold, but there are no folds there.

What could have caused this? It looks like it was the end of one holographic tape and the start of another one. As you can see, there are no small 50s on that divide section.

Is this an error or a variety? Are most $50s like this one?

By the way, did anyone else go to Summer Seminar? You must've seen me :D

Yes, end of roll issues are considered errors. Not sure what you have there D and this could be marker / warning prior to end of roll sort of like a thing OR this could be an entirely separate issue with just the "metallic stripe" by itself.

Recently, there was a book published on "non us currency errors". Not sure if it lists any Canadian errors or is helpful. Have you considered sending an e-mail to BofC with pics and asking them what it could be?

Security strip / magnetic ink errors are hard to notice / figure out in pictures (jmo).

Peace

ah! According to the BoC

Quote:
This mark on the holographic stripe is likely due to a splice that can happen when two pieces of holographic material are joined together to ensure that a continuous roll of foil is applied during the substrate manufacturing process. On occasion, depending on where the splice falls, it can be seen on a bank note. So splicing is part of the normal manufacturing process of bank notes, and not a printing error.

I see... so I guess this would be due to the hologram manufacturer...

it's great you got an answer from them though

I really don't think splice would be an error though - those strips have to break all the time in the manufacture process, they have to put it back together somehow... too bad it's not a "roll splice" in the paper itself, can't say I've ever seen one on a bill, but they happen in normal commercial printing all the time

Paper splices and pre printed stock are considered errors south of the Canadian border, "very rare (R9)" and expensive. You are on a roll D.

Peace
