I want to know the year of this coin and its value, I know its a jewish shekel but beyond that I know very little. Thanks. The coin may look more scratched or damaged than it actually is due to the fact it is in plastic and I do not want to remove it.

It claims to be a shekel of Year 1 of the First Jewish Revolt, 66/7 AD. See the first entry on this wildwinds page (Hendin #655) for similar examples.

Unfortunately, Jewish Revolt shekels just like this one have been extensively copied down through the centuries. If this one is embedded in plastic, it may be very difficult to determine if it is genuine. For me, there are enough similarities between it and a fake coin listed on the FORVM fakes database for me to be skeptical about this one, too.

its clear from the picture of the fake that my coin is not as thick as the one in the image of the fake shekel, and its been in my possession since atleast 1993, it was given to us by someone who purchased coins from respectable dealers. how can I find out if its real, appraisal maybe?

This type is famous, and accordingly over the centuries, would attract the attention of forgers and copiers. I have a very good copy of this coin, but it does not attempt to deceive. On the edge is clearly marked the word 'copy', and because there clearly no intention to deceive, I am happy to have it in my collection.
