Tim's suggestions were good ones. Also, ebay is a good source for supplies and they have an enormous selection of coins once you get the hang of grading and seeing if a coin is priced right. ebay is where I buy the majority of my coins, so I can't give you many online dealer suggestions.

There are lots of members here that also sell coins, check the for sale section. also few members have websites that sell coins. After a while you find out who sells and buys!

My first love is ancients. If I am buying a big ticket item, I need to look at the coin I considering buying first, unless it comes from a reputable auction, such as Heritage. I have a few ancient gold coins, and they have come from Spinks or Seabys in London some years ago. There is some defence mechanism in collecting U.S. coins in MS 63 to 65, because it is harder to fake coins in these grades. I still need to look at such coins before I buy, but that is mainly for grading reasons when they are not slabbed, but I will not bid for them on ebay unless they are slabbed. I also have a fun collection of square coins, with perhaps 120 different types in it. The average value of the coins in this part of my collection are mostly less than $10. ebay comes in handy with my square coin collection. I also have an extensive collection of cash coins from China; the problem here with ebay is that it easy to fake these types of coins, especially fom China, even though they often have a value of under $10. As for ebay, I am happy to buy low value coins from this source and I will add to my square coin collection in this way.

Quote: Littleton Coin Company is incredibly overpriced and your friend should not buy from them. The World Monetary Exchange is also overpriced, after looking at their website.
Sure wish more people would search this forum for such topics. Littleton really is not the place for people that have been on this forum.

I've never used any on line dealers for mechandise but over the years I've heard a real, real lot of great things about those two places. From what some have said, their prices are almost comparable to coin show prices.

For those that search ebay for supplies (as I have done as well) WHen you find what you think is a reasonable priced auction, Google the seller. A large percentage of sellers have sister sites off of ebay where they sell the same items but cheaper. I know when I sell on ebay, I increase all my asking prices to include ebay overhead.

Thanks for all the replies,I will definitely check the nearest local shop and only buy low dollar items on ebay. I have found two potential online dealers: Great southern coin and FastCoin. Has anybody here dealt with either one of these guys? They have some nice stuff. I have also sent off my first coin to be graded (1908 St Gaudens $20.00 Gold) by Anacs last week.

I use https://www.gophersupply.com for my online supplies - both coin and stamp. Prices seem to be really good. Good service as well. If you have a question, they are really quick to answer. When I was a youngster I bought from Littleton and it seemed really easy with the approval service and all. No postage, could see the coins first. I have no idea if I overpaid at the time or not. I was on a very limited budget and they have things delivered to my house that I could buy for $0.65 or $1.50. Nowadays, I agree, they are just way overpriced. As far as ebay goes, I've been thrilled with it. I collect dark side (i.e. not US) so I don't seem to see too many of the same problems AND I don't buy gold or silver so it is more about circulation coins for me.
