Poll Question
When I inherited my Dad's coin collection a few years ago I was excited to find he had a complete Peace dollar set. When I looked at it closely though, the 1928 plain looked under a loupe obviously altered - it has a small melted spot about where a mint mark would be. I have left it sitting in my junk silver ziplock, but should do something with it.

So, a poll:

Poll Choices
Sell it as is on ebay
 Keep it as is
 Melt it
Bash it with a hammer so it doesn't fool anyone else
 Sell it on CCF
 Other (specify below)

I guess it sort of depends on your outlook on sentiment. My Dad is gone so anything he gave me that is keepable, I keep. Why not, doesn't cost you anything to have something to remember him by.
However, there are those that would sell anything and everything from their parents. Up to you.

I'd keep it and do so in such a manner that it's clearly labeled. Just to do your father right, see if some time in the future you can replace it with a real one. =) It was part of his collection for a reason, so why not keep it. =)

I definitely wouldn't sell it. There are too many unscrupulous souls out there. If there's a CCFer here that collects altered dates, and you really would prefer to have the money, you could go for that, but I'm more in favor of just holding onto it, separated (or at least clearly marked, bagged, et cetera) from the rest of the group.

To me anything left to me remains with me or another family member who will hold on to it. After all it is a family heirloom.

That my friend is a tough question, and not one for me to answer. I would however consider physically marking the coin in a manner that would keep the coin at it's current real value which I believe to be melt. But that is just me. Or you could send it off for certification. Who knows, just could be some unknown oddity.

If there is any sentimental connection to the coin I would keep it as is where it is. If not, put a huge scratch on it and sell it for melt value.

There's someone in the forum doing a book on counterfeits and altered coins. He would probably love to get pictures. If he's not on this forum, send an e-mail to Coin World, they'll know who it is and get you his name and e-mail. If it's from your Dad, I wouldn't part with it.
