I just acquired this collection of Gordian III denarii Reverses include A) Victory advancing left, with usual attributes (B) Victory standing left, holding fillet (C) Fortuna enthroned left, two with wheel beneath throne (D) Providence left, holding wand and globe (E) Providence as previous, but globe at feet (F) Apollo seated left, arm resting on lyre; and lastly (G) Gordian in military attire right, holding globe and spea.

Nice bunch. The ones with spiky "radiate crowns" like that are antoninianii; denarii are smaller, and have the emperor wearing a simple wreath. Gordian III is one of the few emperors for which both denominations are readily available (I've got one of each).

It's amazing how many high-grade and "near mint state" Gordian III coins are out there - I've noticed far more than from most other emperors, either before or afterwards. It's as if most of the mintage went straight from the mint into holes in the ground...

Hi Sap,

I actually did mean to say antoninianii (that's how I listed them on my site), slip of the tongue so to speak, but thanks for pointing it out:)

At this early time, antoninianii have not yet been severly debased so actually are silver. Later on, the denomination becomes silvered bronze. It's actually quite difficult to find fully silvered antoninianii of later emperors like Gallienus, Probus etc...
