I recently found this amongst my mother-in-laws papers.

My wife tells me that she remembers using these as paper currency in Israel in the early 1950's when she was a small child.

The front shows the Star of David which is also the symbol of the Magen David Adom (the Israeli equivalent of the Red Cross). It has a face value of 5 Prutah (100 Prutah was worth 0ne Israeli Pound) and also has the words good for travel on service A.S.R.

On the reverse it states that if this note is not used it will be a donation to Magen David Adom Haifa.

My questions are:
Is it really a currency note - does not appear in Pick
Is it just a bus ticket that was perhaps accepted in some stores as currency much the same as sweets were given as change in Italy when there was a shortage of coins.

Is it worth anything

Any help would be appreciated.

Perhaps it was a paper good for issued as a token. Does the Hebrew script not reveal any clues?

I more or less translated the Hebrew script in my post and that is all the information that I have.

I will try and find some old timer here in Israel who might have some more information.
