I got a 1980-d half today and it does not have the normal clink sounds it should. It's not silver nor does it sound like silver. It almost sounds like a wood coin... It looks the same as any other 1980-d half dollar would. I have seen thousands of half dollars before and never one that sounds like this one. I'm sure you guys will tell me to put it on a scale but I don't have one handy. I can post pictures but it looks like a normal half so I don't see the value in that. Any help on why this coin sounds like it does would be nice. Let me know your thoughts.

Could be a Magicians coin. W/o a scale you have limited options... but if you are really curious I would...

1) inspect the edge with a loupe... is is split.. it might be hollow....
2) throw it in h20 ... see if bubbles come from inside... (hollow?) or air trapped b/c it was split...

...

or 3) my personal favroite... throw it at ground real hard and see if it splits (on smooth concrete) the same way you would free a bolt from a socket when it is stuck in it...

Your right! It's a magic coin. Once I removed the back it had been milled. It also has a Mexican coin mounted on the inside. Kinda cool!

It's called "scotch and soda". It's actually a pretty cool trick to win drinks with!

I've seen them selling at magic shops for $25-35, and hear people just releasing them back into the wild. If you don't want it, maybe you could sell it to them.

True it's called Scotch and Soda. However, to make it work you need four pieces. One is the real Mexican Coin. Must be the same as the other half of the Half Dollar on the other side. Then the hollowed out piece of Half Dollar. Then a plastic ring for separating the two by placing the coin when assembled and banging it down so they separate.
I'm sitting here looking at mine now. We have a magic shop near me and it's fun to go there and see all the coin tricks for sale.
Lots and lots of two headed or two tailed coins.
