Notice the star on the outside edge. Anyone hear of this error?

Could be a clash - but it seems the star is incuse. It could also be that it came in contact with another Sac (like someone place one over it and hit both of them).

My guess...

If the star is incuse, it could be a dropped filling. That is, one of the stars on the die got filled with grease and gunk, then the grease fell out and landed on either the die or the next incoming planchet. When that coin was struck, the star shaped glob of grease pushed into the planchet, forming an incuse star. Very interesting, but probably not a big premium.

Cool...I like it. I think Dave42 has a good evaluation on this one. My initial instinct was contact with another coin and some moisture for awhile...but his sounds better. I can't see it being a clash.

The star is incuse. I picked a total of 5 Sacs and 5 presidentials up from a local bank about 3 years ago and gave them to my 19 year old. He kept them stored and I had forgotten about them until last night. I am not sure who turned them in at the bank, but each one appears to have something wrong with it! Two of the Sacs are dark, one of them looks really different in the way of texture, and there appears to be some doubling on one of them. I can't wait to take a closer look at those as well. I hope I dont become too much of a pain over the next several days and I will hopefully find an error sight for these coins.

This forum is as good as any for finding answers, we have some pretty heavy hitters in the numismatic error world that will eventually come by.

This coin, for example, if I would want to verify what it is, and if there are other known errors/varieties such as this one, is there someone on this forum that looks at them? Where and who would you recommend I send them to?

You will usually see dropped letters but other devices can get filled as well, a star is pretty nifty Errors of that type are usually unique since the filling typically adheres to the struck coin and not the die. If you wanted to have to coin examined and get written verification, I would recommend sending it to CONECA's error examination service. One of the examiners listed is Mike Diamond, he is a contributor here so he might chime in on this post as well.
