Hi coin community

Just registered here because I was hoping somone could tell me what this coin is that I found in my house. It looks (To me) like a Roman coin but it's probably just a fake piece of crap or something.

My picture is too big and has the wrong file name or something, to get on here so I don't know what to do about the picture. But basically its a battered coin about the size of a 1 Euro coin, with one of those Roman soldiers with those hats like a horses mane on it. And theres some writing or letters under that, I think 4 letters. It's blank on the back. It looks like it's gold plated or something cos on the worn bits its a darker metal.

Can anyone tell me what it is (or isn't!)?

Thanks!

We'd have to see pix (troll around elsewhere on this forum for directions for posting pix; I use Photobucket to link from, as you can't post directly here but have to use a secondary location) to be sure, but your description sounds a lot like a repro - as far as I know, Romans were all struck on both sides.

And welcome to CCF!

A genuine ancient Roman coin won't be "blank on the back". It could be severely worn, or it could as you say be a reproduction. If it's been gold-plated, perhaps someone's turned it into jewellery, grinding the other side away in the process.

As for the description, can we narrow it down a little more, please? "One of those Roman soldiers with those hats like a horses mane on it" - does it show the soldier in full, like on this coin, or does it just show the head-and-shoulders portrait, like on this one?

Welcome to the community,

This is not an ancient coin and it's not a coin at all but some type of token maybe. It looks like it's made of lead and the image appears to be of a Greek soldier.
