Have posted pictures of the obverse and reverse of this 1859 cent and would appreciate any thoughts or opinions about it's grade prior to TPG'ing it. Many thanks to all who reply.

Posting the following pictures to get some opinions on this 1859 cent I recently acquired. It appears to not only be an 1859 cent variety (D-P,N#9-2 I believe), but it also has a significant Die Break on the reverse (date side) as well as significant doubling on the obverse (portrait side) legend and on the maple leafs and stems on the reverse.

Has this variety (essentially 3 different varieties on 1 coin) previously been reported? I've checked numerous sites, found the die break and the date variety, but have not seen the die doubling characteristics, especially on both sides of the same coin.

Note the "E" that shows significant tripling. The "R" in GRATIA also shows significant doubling (or tripling) as does the "N" in CANADA. Other letters show some evidence of doubling but not as great. Then there is the issue of the doubling of the leaves and stem on the reverse with the die break at about 10:30 - 11:00. Is this common with Canadian coins, because I have never seen anything like it?

I'd appreciate any suggestions on where best to send this for TPG and possible attribution. Any thoughts about value would also be appreciated. Thanks for taking your time to review and comment on this posting.

Adding images of the Obverse and Reverse, should have done this to begin with. Duh?

You need to pick up a copy of the 2011 Charlton Guide, which has a variety section for the Vicky large cent varieties in the back this year. You have a DP#3, a really neat, newly recognized variety. It's been known for a long time, but never formally recognized. It is priced the same as a DP#2. Nice find. I would recommend that you have it TPG'd at CCCS a Canadian grading company with excellent reputation .. and who have hard slabs and electronic referencing. Since they mixed and matched the Obv/Rev marriages when striking because the dies wore so fast, I don't pay alot of attention to what's on the Obverse for the nicely offset 1859's. A greta find of a really scarce coin. Congrats!

R2bR2c, thanks for the great information. I have a copy of the Charlton book, but it is 1994. So I am overdue for an update. Again, many thanks and I'll probably proceed with the TPG at CCCS.
