Awhile back, I was asking about loupes and the majority of you recommended a hastings triplet. I bought one on Amazon from a maker called Belomo. site http://www.belomo.us/ I was thinking about picking up another, maybe a 14x. Anyone have a particular brand they are partial to?

I use a cloth examination glass for looking at coins, and especially at coin shows.
It was designed for the examination of the warp and weft of woven materials. It has a three element lens to eliminate most distortion and colour aberration. The lens is about 30mm in diameter and comes mounted in a frame which equals the focal length.
The method of use is to place the lens over the coin an look down at it with the coin underneath the lens. Your eyes are at about 18" above the lens, so you don't have to work your eyes hard to look through it.

Very interesting. Do you happen to know who makes it or where you got it?

These types of magnifying glasses are common in the weaving industry. They come with a gauge set at focal length, in the case of the glass that I have, is about 30mm.
The instrument that I own is of Japanese origin, and could be more than 50 years old. The three element lens is set in a heavy black lacquered brass frame. My father used to use it before me in the 1950's. The frame folds around the lens into a package 2"x2"x1/2", and fits into my pocket easily. This makes it very usable at coin shows.
More modern cloth magnifying glasses have plastic frames.

I will definitely check that out. I will still need a 14x also. Seems like since this forum has moved, there doesn't seem to be as many people responding. Oh well. Thanks Sel

How do you like the Belomo? All their ads seem a little hyped but I must admit they sound good.

I use a 10x Bausch and Lomb Hastings Triplet. I have had it for 35 years or so.

nybird, I like the belomo. Good construction. My only complaint so far is that is has gotten a little loose. Not the glass but the steel holding it. This means that the glass frame comes open easily. I can hold the center and flip the glass round and round if that makes any sense. It's all I have now for waiting for something a little higher quality.

If money was not the focal point would you prefer the B+L hastings?

I don't have a B&L to compare it to. The Belomo and B&L are not that far off in price. I think I paid around $40 and I believe the B&L is around $60. I will say this. If I'd had it to do over again, I would have gone with the B&L. At the time, I just didn't know about the B&L so that's why I didn't get it. The Belomo is a quality lens and I have no complaints. I just need to find a 14x!
