Canada's bank note history dates back to theFrench playing card money of 1685. Army bills were issued for the War of 1812, a large number of private banks issued money in the 1836-1837 Rebellion period, and probably the earliest of what becam,e the Chartered banks was the Montreal bank issues of 1817-1822. This bank became the Bank of Montreal, which is still in existance. After Canada became a country, the Canadian government issued Charters allowing Banks to operate, hence the term Chartered Banks. They were allowed to issue money until 1945, when the Government took over all note-issueing functions. The money is still valid, although it's collector value has skyrocketed lately.
