Over the weekend I was working with my tractor and uncovered a metal cash box. It looked to be in good shape and when I shook it it sounded like coins. Box had a combination lock on the front. Not having the combination I used my leather man tool to pry it open expecting to find a box full of nuts and washers. ( Who throws away a box of money) I opened it to find coins but my hopes of a big score where dashed right away when I noticed a State Quarter sitting on the top of the pile. All in all a little over $3 worth of change, mostly cents. I could just see the ebay listing now. Old cash box uncovered!! This must be old as it is all metal (never mind the made in Taiwan sticker on the bottom I'm sure I can get that off)

When I was stationed at Ft Bliss Tx. Was out metal detecting and found this bar that was shaped like a gold bar. All dirty and heavy thought I had stuck it rich. Turned out to be a lead bar. Talk about a bummer.

Sounds like a farmer there. My wife was a farmers daughter and when she was a kid, her and many other kids would bury any money they got so other kids in the family wouldn't take it and blow it on candy. My wife always wondered what ever happened to all that.

When we moved to where I now live we bought a 67 acre farm in 1998 and in 2000 we bought the farm next to us which had another 130 acres and the cash box was found in a dump behind what we now call the quest house. I keep pushing it in and will at some future date bury it completely. My guess is that the cash box was some kids piggy bank that got thrown out when the last renters moved out before we bought the property. I had a neighbor ask if he go in and haul out the metal from the dump to the recyclers and I told him to go for it. He says he knows there is at least 1 car in there!

The coin that started my collection over 50 years ago was found in a metal cash box. The cash box was in a large safe, of which my father had to pick the lock, because the key had been lost! Even though I was standing near him, I couldn't figure out how he managed to pick the lock, and he refused to tell me!
It was a George 1V British Shilling in about VF. I still have it.
