My dad acquired this coin over 50 years ago, and we know nothing about it. Anybody have ideas what it is?

Hello and welcome.

Sad to say, but your mystery piece is not a real coin. It's a replica of an ancient Jewish coin, a sela or tetradrachm from the time of the Second Revolt, circa 130 AD. The original coins are silver, and have a crude depiction of the long-lost Temple on the other side. See this example on Wildwinds. The legend is in ancient Hebrew script and translates to "Year 2 of the freedom of Israel".
