I have never liked the quality of Aussie proof coins. The problem, to my eye, is in the excessive amount of sand blasting to the legends and images to produce the cameo effect. A great deal of the detail of the imagery is obliterated.
The British
Royal Mint seems to always get this aspect of the proof minting process right. I have a 1937 George V1 gold proof coin, and the images are sand blasted with a much finer grit, and so leave all of the original detail of the design behind.
