Hi.

I've been finding out a bit about USA nickels, about how "full steps" are most desired.

Also I've read mention that US nickels may not be made anymore at some time in the near future. Is this so, or just rumor?

I'm wondering about whether I should be protecting their surfaces and hanging onto any US nickels in good shape or with full steps? I do often receive them in my change here in Canada, and I even had a $2 roll of nickels from the bank last week that only had 10 Canadians, all the rest were US. Should have been the other way around in Canada I was delighted. I like the look of US coins better compared to our less high relief looking coins. I bought nickels just because I like nickels but can't afford to hoard too many of them, hence I'm focussing on pennies to suit my current situations.

I got a 1957 and a 1964, the rest were from 1970 through late 90's. The 57 and 64 have no steps left to speak of, nor do the 4 1970 S&D ones, and are pretty dinged up. The 90's are the best for steps and better shape overall, a couple or so may even have all the steps, but I have to scan them first to be able to count.

Any US nickel collectors in here?

Rest in Peace

Tough call. The price guides show decent values for 90s nickels in MS65 with full steps but there are lots of them. Open a roll of new nickels from the 2000s and you will get a bunch with FS. FS nickels from the 80s & 70s are tough to come by and earlier than that are just plain scarce. For example-a 1964 D nickel with over 1.7 billion made shows a MS65 FS price of $500 in the NN coin market guide. I've never even seen a picture of one.
Just some thoughts of mine about your question.

Thank you Numismo. Sounds interesting. So it's very hard to find the great nickels and can be very profitable whenever you do if you want to sell them. Who knows where my coins interests will lead me. This is all fun stuff for me, but it's also becoming more food for thought on practical levels for me, the more I explore this whole area Hmmmmmmmmmmmm. I'm still so new at coins, so lots to learn, and it's great to have an interest like this to enjoy from home and fill my hermit time productively :)

I think there's a certain % of collectors who seek-out full anything. Full wreath, full bands, full steps.....etc.
