The proposal to make new 5p and 10p coins out of nickel-plated steel rather than a cupro-nickel alloy is one of many measures being considered by the government with a view to reducing the fiscal deficit.

Whoever wrote that should be schooled.

As for detecting the counterfeits - the new steel coins will be the counterfeit!

I went to da school where they learned ya to talk proper!

I have 5P and 10P steel coins,...... yes steel!, coins as mint errors. They have no plating on them at all.

Quite a few countries around the world already have plated steel coins, South Africa being one of them.

Maybe they should just do a total overhall in the smae year, smaller 2p, smaller 50p, thinner £1, smaller £2 etc etc!!
