http://cgi.ebay.com/1847-Seated-Lib...em2eafa66c6b amongst other finished auctions, didn't realize I posted the same link twice

Plus I have a really tough time winning the pre-1853 ones, almost always outbid whereas I win the later ones all the time.

The pre 1853 pieces are much tougher than the later ones. The reason for this was the weight reduction that took place in 1853. All the gold coming out of California caused the price of silver to rise in terms of gold. By 1853 the silver in a fifty cent piece was worth close to 53 cents. Then after the weight reduction a pre-1853 was worth close to fifty five cents as compared to the post 1853 halves. Yhis resulted an a great deal of pre-1853 silver being withdrawn from circulation and melted down. So mintage figures for the earlier coins can't be trusted.

Neither can the price guides evidently, then. However when I go on heritage, there's no serious difference except for a few dates in mid-high grades...

Another example here. The guide says $300. Now it's $360 plus 15% buyer's fee.

Now $380. That coin is exceptional for the grade though in my opinion, and teletrade is a pseudo-shill rip off
