"SC" means "Senatus Consulto" that is 'struck under the the authority of the Senate' (of Rome). That applied to Roman bronze and brass coins only. The silver and gold coins were stuck under the authority of the Emperor. You never see "SC" on silver and gold coins.
I have even seen in Rome, 'SPQR' abbreviated from 'Senatus Populi Que Romani' on cast iron sewer manhole covers!

Thank to all, I fully agree. Here's a little of my favorite salad. I only had one more ready to go, but am really thinking I will go back and get new shots of all the rest of the Constans and family - brass (there were about a dozen.) They looked really similar to me, but perhaps with the ID expert here, they are not.

Beautiful coin and an easy one to ID. Julius Caesar Aureus, 46 BC Issue of Aulus Hirtius, Vailed head of Vesta, Sear 5 #1395. Several examples listed in Wildwinds.

Are coins like this Die pressed, or is there some (or all) hand work, so they are somewhat individual? I look at this one, along with the many example's on wildwind and see quite a variation? Most easily noticed are the dots and lack of them. For example, at the top of the Lituus (the curly line) some of the coins have the dot at the end, some do not and that is just one example? thanks

They were all hand carved and struck.

Wow - beautiful coins, the Athenian Owl is fantastic, in fact they all are!
I was at the British Museum a few months ago and the quality of some of their coins was incredible, made me very jealous.
