as a new guy I was just wondering how everyone stores there collectoins or specail collection pieces. I was thinking of getting a safe for the house and wondering if this was the best pay to go, I've already had one house burn down so I now the old freezer trick don't work, LOL

I use bank safety deposit boxs, two of them. I've had one house burn to the ground and the next one hit by a tornado....I don't take chances! The only coins in my house are low value stuff, like the Memorial cents I search. I'd be mad if something happened, but not crushed.

I keep all mine at my house, because I would rather enjoy them for twenty years and lose them, then have them stashed away and rarely see them for 50 years.

I bought a safe a couple of months ago and in my opinion you can never get a big enough one. Been thinking about checking into a large gun safe to give my collection a place to grow.

Foolsgold,

Watch out if you keep high grade MS coins in a gun safe with guns. The lubricating oil gets in the air and makes them tone ugly. Airtites are the way to go in a gun safe with guns, or in tupperware....

I learned this mistake the hard way :( :( :(

I used to keep all my coins in a neighbors house but they all vanished while he was in jail.
For real I have 5 safe deposit boxes in different banks. Never a problem with a bank but just in case, I like to spread things out. Where I live there are many banks about the same distance from me so makes little difference.
As to a safe in a house, possibly check out the tab at the top for Search for safes in a house. I really don't like the idea for many reasons.
One is criminals find out about a safe in a house and assume you have millions in cash. A gun to you or a family members head opens those safes fast. One neighbor of mine found that out and also ended up in the hospital.
When a large safe is delivered and you live in a normal type area, about a million people see that. Slight exageration but neighbors just have to know what you have you know. Now they all tell everyone they know about your fantastic wealth where a safe is required. May as well have a sign in front of your house saying safe inside.
If you have a safe it really should be hidden. Friends, relatives, neighbors coming over and seeing a safe can end up spreading all over the world. Another slight exageration you know.
During a fire that safe will get hot. Maybe not enough to melt your coins but any plastic is now melted all over those coins. Albums too end up as ashes all over the coins.
And in spite of all the people that say nothing to fear, mine is bolted to the floor. Remember that some well equipped criminals can fix that.

thanks guys, i'll have to look into the safety deposit box, and maybe a smaller safe for the house, something I can bring in myself and not draw alot of attention.

I have a small floor safe, have had it for a few years. Keep everything in it, but between the coins and card collection I'm running out of room.

Now here is an idea. If you are a bit on the crafty side you could make yourself a coffee type table out of a safe. Same with end tables. A bed headboard and night stands too could be made from safes only made to look like furnature.
This is odd that no safe of furniture manufacturer has come up with this idea. I would imagine for many, many people that want a place to place valuables in their home, such items would really be popular.
So if your a person that wants to try a buisness, that well could be one for you. And in the meantime, you would save on the cost of safe deposit boxes for coins.

It has been a while, but I remember seeing stuff like this advertised in the magazines (Coins, COINage, and Coin Prices, etc.). I might just have to pull my old magazines out of storage to make sure I am not imagining them.

Carl speaks wise words....as usual.

Rather than have a safe, it's better to have a super, secret stash area like the floor. It's something you can make yourself and nobody but you will know about it. I have one in my house that is used to store my wife's jewellery. NEVER keep jewellery in your bedroom. That's the FIRST place a criminal will look.
