I put 5 of my rubles obverse facing up. Then I noticed that the lettering on the edge was different in 2 out of 5 coins. Coins 1,4,5 have have correct edge lettering, in respective to the obverse which is facing up. However 2, and 3 have their edge lettering rotated, so is that a common mistake?

If the lettering was applied to the edge either before or after striking you would expect the edges to one way 50% or the time ans the other way the other 50% or the time. The only time it will be consistently one way is if the lettering is applied at the same time as the strike. In that case the edg will be applied through the use of a segmented collar and you will see a raised vertical bar on the edge between the segments. Since I don't see such bars on these coin the edge is almost certainly not applied by a collar and the roughly 50/50 split you are seeing is normal. Neither of them are errors.

Yep, edge inscriptions usually have "random" orientations. In most cases the blanks get their edge lettering first, then the obverse and reverse designs are added. Some collectors will still want both the "A type" and the "B type". Oh well ...
