Excuse me if this is a stupid question, but I've only collected gold dimes and silver eagles to date, and recently found this forum and started going through rolls here and there.

the question: if I order boxes of dimes/half dollars from banks, do they order them from the treasury or? and if they come from the treasury will I get a good mix of dates or will it all be recently minted and so, say, like all 2010 or something?

You will get coins rolled from a third party such as brinks. there should be a wide variety in those rolls. (I got a 2010 D halve just yesterday.)

I have the best luck searching rolls that come straight from Brinks and wrapped in clear plastic. Every paper roll that I open around here has already been searched.

to the forum.

What are you searching for? ...... 500 rolls in 1 day is quite a chore.

At least you get half dollar rolls to look through. As I've griped about many times, my bank never has any. I guess I'll just have to cough up $500 and order a box. I guess it's time to join em.

I have been under the understanding that banks serviced by Loomis got their halves from the Fed -- or maybe that Loomis has a special contractual relationship with the Fed. Does anyone have good information about this?

Here is possibly some good information about the relationship between Loomis and the Fed:

"Loomis offers a comprehensive solution for coin services throughout much of our national service network. In fact, we serve as Federal Reserve Coin Depots in 40 locations, enabling us to provide the most stable and reliable coin services in the industry and, in most cases, help you reduce inventory. We offer complete processing services including sorting, wrapping, storage and of course delivery."

http://www.loomis.us/products-servi...cessing.aspx

Maybe that's why coin rolls delivered by Loomis don't have their company name splashed all over them like the Brinks rolls do.

what do they mean by sorting? going through and stealing all the taxpayers' worthwhile coinage? well I guess that's us doing that, heh.

anyhow, why wouldn't they put their name on the rolls? I'm confused.

I mean if Loomis is acting as an agent for the Fed, then it wouldn't put the Loomis name on rolls.

Oblak, you are collecting gold dimes? I've found one in three years, I'm assuming you mean plated?

You will probably do much better searching rolls brought in by customers. Boxed haves will contain 99% searched/dumped coin, depending on the amount of hunters in your area. It's the reason I quit ordering boxes a year ago. I have searched approx $3500 in halves this year and all cust rolled, and have found several solid silver rolls (of 40%). Good luck.
