are ALL silver dimes distinguishable by the rim? or are newer proofs, etc. that might get thrown into circulation somehow different?

all AMERICAN silver coinage (with the exception of 40% halves and 40% ikes) no matter if they are proof or pre 65 have a white edge.

yeah I was thinking though, can't the white metals get a little tarnished so you mistake them for the clads?

Yea, they can look black this is especially seen with old dimes. They will never appear copper though!
