Shatsi, you'll have to get plenty of good coins & banknotes. There's a lot of commemorative coins you will find in change, especially the 1 Rupee & 5 Rupees coins. There is also a bimetal 10 Rupees as well.
I'm not sure if Sri Lanka is still issuing postal orders. These are popular collectables that are being avidly collected, especially in England.
Aidan.

Aidan, I will try my best to get some for you. I managed to get my hands on the recent commemoratives but those are not in circulation, I have pictures in the gallery.

Hello everyone, I'm back. The two weeks was great. Looking forward to catching up. My aunt gifted me a medal awarded to my grandfather by the Queen in 1953 when sri lanka was a british colony. Unfortunately she cleaned it so it would look nice. I'll post pictures as soon as I can.

Welcome back Shatsi, glad you had a safe trip. That's neat about the medal. 1953 was the first year of Queen Elizabeth's reign I think. Wonder if that award presentation was her first official duty?

I didn't know that. I'm going to find out its history. I don't know anything about medals.

Shatsi,I would consider having the medal conserved by a professional organization. I'm sure you know who they are. I don't hold with cleaning coins, but this is a very unique medal that has to do with your family history and it justly deserves restoration, if required. You also might try a well established museum for assistance, and I would even go so far as to contact the Sri Lanka Embassy for assistance, I'll bet that they would gladly assist. Whatever you do, best of luck with a medal to be proud of and congratulations to you and your family. Berry
