I need some input here. I just found 4 sets I bought years ago that I forgot I had. Do you folks think I should open them up for individual coins or keep as is. In other words, which way is usually more valuable. I'd kind of like to get rid of them and get some Indian pennies or Buffalo nickels instead.

Thanks....Erik

Keep them in the set unless someone makes an offer for a single coin that makes it worth it to break them up.

I just bought one last weekend at a flea market for $7. I think I got the better end of the deal.

Frankly, I would advise to hold these for the future. Neither the sets nor the individual contents are all that valuable today (unless there are very high-grade individual coins involved), but sets get broken up every day for the same reason you mention. They're getting older, and scarcer. Individual coin prices from this era will not change quickly - no faster than coin prices in general - but the set price will do nothing but climb as a function of its' increased age and scarcity.

Hold every set, pre-1965.

Thank you for the input. I came here first because of the in detail responses to questions and the members excellent knowledge of coins! I guess I'll just wait and see for awhile. I just don't collect much modern. We ussually have 2 or more coin shows in this area a month and I'll also check with some of the sellers there....I just can't thank the people involved in this website enough for all the info and input...AWESOME

I agree. This is why sets get broken apart. There is no need to break it apart until necessary.

I would just sell them as sets and then you could get your Indian Head cents or Buffalo nickels you want.
