DCH: Thanks again. I'm somewhat confused though. When I put 1223 AH into the date calculator it comes back with 1808 AD. How did you arrive at 1829, and what does 1223/23 indicate? Thanks.

1223 is the year Mahmud II came to power(Accession year) and this coin was issued in the 23rd year of his reign(regnal year).
accession year(1223)+regnal year(23)-1=year of issue(1245) AH1245=1829

Thanks for the details. Where is the accession year and, more importantly, where would I find the regnal year?

Rotate the bottom pic 180. Accession year is at the bottom, regnal year at the top.

I think I'm catching on, though the conversion between AH and AD seems to vary 1 year depending on which way you go. However, can you explain why you subtracted a year in your conversion from AH to AD in your message of 10/15? Thanks.

The accession year is regnal year one. AH1223/1=1223 AH1223/2=1224
The Hijra year is 11-12 days shorter than a standard year.

Thank you so much, particularly DCH, for the education in reading dates on arabic coins. Your assistance has been extremely valuable!
