I have a number of older pennies, 1/2 pennies and the like from 1837 through 1860's from various provincial banks. I am not sure but there is an indication they were part of a collection of Canadian tokens my dad bought eons ago. He last graded and priced them in 1977 using Charlton, Breton & W. Raymond.
Is there a better way to have these evaluated than spending a fortune at grading firms?

Ideas, anyone?

Thank You!

Pardon my ignorance, but did the RCM even mint any 1/2s? I think they are all tokens. Newfoundland, New Brunswick etc... Bet you have some neat ones. I'd like to see them. Can you post pics/scans?

There was no such thing as the RCM until 1908. Coins we're minted by Heaton and RM before that. I'm not sure where tokens we're minted

You are both correct about them being tokens as opposed to RM issued coinage.

What I had read is that there was a shortage of minted coin for transactions from 1800-1860's
so banks and businesses minted their own as a convienence to their customers and to assist trade.

In one case the Bank of Montreal issued an 1837 1/2 penny on the reverse, and on the obverse lists "Province du Bas Canada" Un Sou

I don't have any real information on these other than what my very methodical and careful father has written on each paper flap. Most coins are in fine to very fine condition with
each issuer clearly indicated on the coin.for instance of the four 1837 "Quebec" pennies (deux sou) I have the issuers are Bank of Montreal, Bank du Peuple, City Bank, Quebec Bank. There are number references to W.Raymond, a catalog perhaps, with images of these. Does anyone know about W. Raymond or if there is information about him?

Wayte Raymond is the author of "The coins and tokens of Canada" : an illustrated list of all the types of Canadian coins and tokens from 1670. It is a old catalog, I think no longer updated.

The new Charlton token book is out( about $30 and up)or you could post pics here and get opinions on them. Each token grades a little different depending on the mint which struck them. The book will help with the varities and some pricing(some is a little off) The 1860 is it from Newfoundland?
