Quarter Roll Searching

Any tips for how to order boxes or quarters, halves, and dollars? I am new and have seen on YouTube that tellers can be difficult. Not sure who to ask or what to ask without getting the run-around or lied to.

Wow! Great finds BigAppleBucky Congrats! I've been searching since April and have't found even a single silver yet from about 24 boxes, of course more than half of the boxes have been BU new boxes either 2018 or Lowell 2019.

My advice is to call you local bank branches that you have a bank avccount with and ask to speak to the manager.
introduce yourself professionally, and get their name and use it a few times while talkign to them on the phone, it helps to show professionalism.

Then basically ask the manager if they could order a box of quarters for you and you would pick it up if they can and see what they say.

Now half dollars and dollars are a real problem, banks don't like them, they do not use them and they never want to see them ever again if they did get them for you.
If you ask for halfs or dollar coins, they will likely shut you down right there.

Best to start with commonly circulating coins and build a relationship and when speaking to the bank manager or head teller after a while and they know you, MAYBE they will order those types of coins for you, but maybe not. I'd get the door open for pennies, nickels, dimes and quarter and worry about the non-circulating coins later, which are much more difficult to get a bank to order for you..... because they hate dealing with them, and the people over their heads hate dealing with it also.
Contrary to popular belief, there isn't much silver in Halfs anymore out there to find, and there isn't much in quarters either. there's still some in dimes though.


there is this coin roll hunter on youtube that was getting halves from a few banks, well he went and had them order like 38 boxes and of course they did, but now for some reason (Guess why?) he can't even get a box of pennies anymore from any of them, and has $19,000 in halfs he needs to dump somewhere. LOL that coinstar fee is gonna be a killer or he's gonna have to try to spend them most likely, but they will be showing up at all the local banks if he does spend them... pretty much killed his own connections.

I ask at banks whenever I stop if anyone turned in any halfs or dollar coins they want to get rid of, and take what I can get rather than ask for them to order them for me in boxes. It's never caused a problem but I can't bring them back to the bank that orders for me.

That the other thing that's really important. Whatever bank does order coin for you, DO NOT dump back in that bank, they will cut you off, in fact, do not dump at a different branch of the same bank nearby, they will talk to each other if a bunch of half show up and they will get you cut off also. Do not ask to "swap" searched rolls for new rolls or "trade out", If they get it for you, say thank you and take it, and they never want to see it again. they will continue to get them for you if you do it this way, be nice, don't ever cause a problem, and if they miss orders her or there just act like it's not a problem, maybe next week. They are doing you a favor really, they aren't supposed to service roll hunters. Let them set the rules on what's comfortable for them, then as time passes see if you can up the orders each week.

If I get $20-$50 in halfs or dollar coins at a time from asking for customer turn ins, I don't mind the coinstar fee, or I take the Amazon giftcard, but I make sure I don't dump where it will affect my "get" bank where my coins come from.

BigKingdom, thank you very much for the detailed advice. I think I will just stick to quarters and dimes to not upset the banks. I doubt I would be lucky enough to come across a silver half anyways.

The guys at the bank branch I use have been really helpful, so I dropped off a Starbucks gift card for them this past Friday, and they were all really appreciative.

Each of the teller stations have a box of quarters that they pull rolls out of.....two of the stations had all older Loomis wrapped coin and the other two had the War in the Pacific Guam and the AMP design quarters that had the Lowell W's mixed in. I was going to grab some rolls of half dollars today, and in line with the teller that handles the change orders for the branch, the guy in front of me was asking for halves too....so the teller asked me if I was going to need halves today. Recognizing that, I told him that I was fine with just getting rolls of quarters and that the other customer could take all of the half dollars that he wanted. There were about 25-30 rolls, and I had already opened 15 rolls from that box with not much in it, so I just figured that will get a fresh box on next week's order. He was happy, I assured him I had no problem with him getting the half dollars. I was going to get 15 rolls of quarters, and saw that there were about the same number left in the box. They were all new BU WIP rolls, so I just asked if it was OK to just take the rest of the rolls and I got all 30. He then opened a fresh Loomis box, but showed me that new box was all older circulated rolls.

Seems like I got a little good karma, though. The 30 rolls of WIP BU's gave up 21 W's. One roll had 3 W's, and a couple of others had 2 W's in them.

This week's box update: finally a circulated box of quarters and a whole lot of "different" to search!

That's all for this week's hunt. I did also get a decent amount of 2010-2013 lower mintage state park quarters, almost a roll,out of the box. I've been working on a mixed roll from each year with 4 Ps and 4 Ds of each design for something to do while hunting.
