This is a coin that I posted many months back as a possible Indian coin. I have been trying to find out for a very long time what it is and discovered at a recent coin club meeting that it is a silver Spanish Moors coin. Does anyone have an idea of date, grade or value. I would love to be able to have the identity complete.

Here be your old thread - your pics never loaded properly, so I never replied to it.

Which I for one am glad about, because I probably would have steered you wrong as well; "Indian temple token" would have been my guess, too. Your club member has better instincts than me, because it turns out that there are indeed square coins from that region; Here's the book about them. I assume it is silvery-looking?

The square coins of the Moorish states are scarce, and I frankly don't know enough about the series to say one way or the other whether this coin belongs to that series, without a lot more research. There are only a few of the earlier types listed on zeno; if this is Moorish, it's a type later than those I believe.

I can, however, tell you that both pics are upside-down.

Sap, Thank you very much for the reply. I did have some issues when I was first trying to post images.

I'm not a bit surprised that I have them upside down. It was a 50% chance and I chose incorrectly. It is somewhat silvery. The color is off due to the type of lighting I believe. I was told by the same gentlemen that they used a cheap grade of silver which seems right as well.

I will continue to attempt to nail down the spicifics if I can.

DCH finally nailed this one down when a similar one was recently posted here. Moorish Spain is right after all: it's an "anonymous square dirham" from the Almohad dynasty.

Time to finally move this thread to it's rightful place.
