1983 Penny (Near Beads - Far Beads) Question ?

I came across this penny and did a search on ebay for this date. My search was for listings that were already sold. I came across two different listings. My guess is that it relates to how far the beads are to the rim of the coin, or how far they are in relation to each other. Also, what may also be the case is that both varieties are of the same rarity, and the near beads one simply sold for more because it is MS-66, as opposed to the other one which is MS-65. All of this information may be wrong, so dont trust it until it is verified. andrew Report this Post to the Staff

Brissyboy Valued Member Australia 335 Posts	Posted 08/24/2006 12:26 pm Tim, The two varieties are listed on page 74 of A Charlton Standard Catalogue Canadian Coins 60th Anniversary Issue (2006) by W. K. Cross. The highest grade both have been given is MS-65. What I don't understand is they both have a price in that grade of only Can$3. Mintage was 975,510,000 total for 1983. bromac Valued Member Canada 195 Posts	Posted 08/24/2006 5:53 pm The price reference that I always refer to is the trends section of the Canadian Coin News and they don't show separate prices for that year. I would assume from this that mintage of both types is approximately equal.From your picture I would say that you have the far beads variety.The trends price for an MS-65 example( the highest they show ) is $40.00. Zonad Pillar of the Community Canada 1472 Posts	Posted 08/24/2006 11:40 pm Because people are starting to collect and pay a premium for highest known the coin is selling for about 6 times its actual value. Numismatic BU means it is from an uncirculated set from the mint and many people don't know what the Numismatic Bu comment means. This is average condition for sets, but because it is MS66 the buyer thinks it is high grade. If it was from a roll I think it would be worth the price. Report this Post to the Staff
