I always try for the real thing. Patterns of coins that that are precursors of coins that went into circulation are usually very rare, and in my opinion grossly undervalued. If can get them, I will, and I will keep them. Usually, these experimental coins are never intended to leave the mint. I have a few patterns of this kind. To widen the chance of finding such numismatic material, I will jump on any world coin pattern. Some of the French material of 1848 is quite interesting, as are also some German patterns. These tend to be slightly more 'common'.
Having noted that, some patterns have been made by the millions. For example, some Euro and Ecu coins, which were made in huge quantities so that the whole population can be tested.

Well thats great, most of us can not afford the circ, patterns are a lot more and would think you would have to go to a specialied dealer .

Indeed, most of the patterns that I have, and to be admitted it is not many, have come via a dealer who has quite a lot of expertise in their staff to assess this type of material. Even so, it has taken me many years to acquire what I do have.

Hello all, please consider the following: It is illegal in the USA and Canada( and other civilized countries) to copy and use / distribute material created by others without their express permission.Even if such information is already posted on the internet. This is called COPYRIGHT. So, BEFORE you copy from a catalog, regardless from which one, GET PERMISSION TO DO SO. It is usually granted. Otherwise you might find yourself in deeb doggy doodoo.
