Is anyone familiar with this token?

Sandon-B.c.-Token

Sandon-B.c.-Token
I'd particularly like to know if it was ever issued in any other metal than silver.
Many thanks
Bob

Hi, that's history that's kind of in my neighborhood in the Kootenays mountains ranges. I knew I'd heard of Sandon before. I've probably been there, definately passed through it at least I'm sure as I've been all through there!! I googled the town and it looks like it was a ghost town that also had a hotel or something called The Virginia. I haven't read the history yet to know if your tokens is mentioned but it definately is related to our Historic site.

I thought of gold or silver mining right away as BC has a lot of old historic sites ... hope you enjoy a bit of history about where your token comes from at least. Meanwhile will see what I can google up specific to it for you and will post if I find something.

Hmmmm, couldn't find any of the tokens yet but it looks like they do come up in ebay sometimes and all say silver. Haven't found gold ones mentioned but found mentions of a "silver rush", so I don't know if other metals were ever used.

Maybe if you shoot an email to these folks they might be able to give you more info about tokens. The site is the Sandon Historical Society page with a contact link obvious.

Failing getting info there or from others in here who know more, I can always contact a friend of mine who happens to live in Slocan and she loves history stuff. She'd probably be glad to ask around locally and get back to me.

Many thanks Dottir, both for the info and the speed of the reply. I've just won this tonight, for next to nothing; and I was fairly sure that it might be silver.
I go to the big island every few years for a holiday, so maybe next time I'll have a look at Sandon.
Thanks,
Bob

I'm glad I could help a bit :) I googled some more and it so happens that the VIRGINIA was a "block" and had businesses and I don't know what in it, but it included A BANK in its heyday! The Virginia is long gone now though I think.

I saw some photos of the museum and my brain finally kicked in. I was there! in 2003 with an old friend and we stopped all day. A day wasn't near long enough to enjoy seeing all the artifacts and chatting with the woman there, hearing their stories and reading stories. Its a wonderful funky place with an old train and lots of history feel. I'm sure they probably have samples of tokens on display and can tell you whatever you need to know.

Well there, have done my good deed for the day :)

Congrats on winning the token Bob. I hope you like it as well when you have it in your hands. If you ever visit, don't even try in winter! That road is often impassible in winter!

These were made in 1972 by Canada West Restorations Sandon Ltd. There were 3 souvenir tokens made for sale to the public and visitors to the partly restored town of Sandon. A silvered token for $1.00 and a gilded token for $20.00. These are souvenirs only and not meant for trade.

Sandon is about 100 miles north of Nelson, B.C. and was the location of rich silver ore deposits. This was mined in the 1890's and early 1900's. It was incorporated as a city on January 1st 1898, almost destroyed by a fire in 1900, rebuilt, and then went down hill as silver prices declined and was finished off with the 1955 flood.

There was a Reco Hotel in Sandon.. All in all a very interesting part of B.C. history..

Wow. That explains why I didn't find any mentions in the history sites about these coins from back then.

I am reviving this old thread to add a scan of the reverse of the $20.00 gold version of the token. Note that the only change is the different value, and respaced text.

Sandon-B.c.-Token

The obverse is identical to the $1.00.

Also some futher information from "The British Columbia Token Database" by Ronald Greene:

The silver one (not silvered) had a mintage of 5000, while the (10 karat) gold one (not gilded) had a mintage of 126.

The third "coin" mentioned above was actually a 1 ounce ingot of pure silver.
