Hello Everyone. I'm new here and any help, observation and/or constructional critisim is welcome.

I'm an antique dealer - mostly oriental items, and I don't know much about coins. However, I now have a problem and hope I will be able to seek useful information on this forum as needs arise. My father had built a coin collection for his personal pleasure over many years - a little of everything from city-state coins to (relatively) modern American. It has fallen upon me to 'pass the pieces along' and this is the first one I'm dealing with.

The coin's description is: Scotland. James VI. AR Thistle-Merk, 1601, Double Strike. A couple of questions: Is it 'real' and as unusual as my research and lack of results might indicate? and, if so, is there any kind of rule of thumb or resource for finding a relative value for it?

Any help or 'point in the right direction' would be appreciated.

Yes, I agree, I really do need to work on my lighting.

Actually, I think I've seen that one in my wanderings researching this one. I guess mine had more of a life of leisure.

What I really don't understand, though, is why I can't find any that have the 1601 date on them. And, was the over or double strike common on the 1601? I found vague reference but that's about all. I guess I will have to break down and get some reference material. Especially since there are other things like a William & Mary and I have no idea yet what they mean by pearls on the crown (I can't see any difference) or caud? or something like that. I guess I've got a long haul ahead of me.

Thank you for showing me the 1602 and I'm glad you think this is a nice looking piece.

Maybe you haven't looked very hard.....These things in this 1601 date are far from rare, despite the hype given by certain sellers.

Here is the site: (scroll down until you reach James VI).

Here is my only resized scan of one of my few James VI Scottish coins......a rather large coin at 30 shillings (circa 1603).

Thank you for the 3 links, especially the catalogue listing. One of the things I found is that I get too many of the search results from the UK or Europe in the run-of-the-mill searches. Or, if they are indexed, they are on page 20 of google or whatever and long before I can find them, I get side-tracked by something or other.

Have you any idea why it was a double-strike? Wasn't 1601 the first year for that particular design? And if so, would someone have been 'back dating' it, so to speak?

Anyway, thank you again for sharing!
