I recently(as in today) came across a nice chunk of bullion. It is a one pound silver proof of the 1794 "Flowing Hair" silver dollar. It has a COA that includes a serial number(which is 096) and the serial number is on the ridge of the coin, so it looks legit but I'm not sure... I've googled "Federal Coin Fund" and haven't really found anything about them, so I'm feeling a little uneasy. I have pics the guys sent me via email, but I will have to get some better quality ones.

Never heard of it but I can tell you this much- it is completely unrelated to the US Mint or any government agency. You say it is one pound but what kind of pound? Silver should only be measured in troy units(12 troy oz/pound, 31.1grams/troy oz).

Does that mean it's fake, right there?

Here is a pic of the COA that came with it.....

Ist probally not fake, just a privately minted coin/medal. Simmilar to the Franklin Mint. If it is silver its worth spot, perhaps a little over.

That is truly the plainest C.O.A. I've ever seen. I have quite a few, and have seen many more C.O.A.s, and they are quite decoratively printed, usually looking more "stock certificate like" with gold or silver highlites/embossing/some sorta logo/etc.

Surely to have the wherewithall to produce such a high calibre product as outlined in the C.O.A., that such a company would put more effort into having a more official type document as a C.O.A.... It would be nice if the piece were marked as to purity and weight, perhaps on the edge at least.

I currently can add no further to the topic. I'd like to see pictures too, as well as of the C.O.A. I'm also gonna do some searching...

Today when everybody has a computer, a reasonable quality printer, and all kinds of fancy fonts available, all these COAs mean nothing. I can print a royal looking COA certifying that a washer from my toolbox is a treasure from a sunken ship.

... ^^^ That's great. So why didn't they at least try a little harder?

And I must disagree that a C.O.A. means nothing... maybe to you... but it's always nice to have a matched set, even from major/recognized mints.

What I mean is that it's much easier to forge COA than a coin. And just like one should not blindly trust a slab anymore, I would personally be skeptical about COAs.

COAs from recognized government operated world mints are a good thing and can add a bit of value when present. COAs from private companies making oddball products are only worth the reputation of a company that you may or may not have ever heard of and one that may or may not be still in business.

hmm, just re-reading this and my last post comes off a little harsher than I intended ... 'cuz I will gladly buy a collector bullion piece near spot... without the fancy pants outer box, inner case, C.O.A. et al. Maybe even with coinular damage... a gouge or two . A 2x2 makes shipping cheaper!... but all the trappings... well they can be kinda nice too. As for re-sale, of course an avid collector would like things as complete as possible.(+=>$!)

I have exactly the same pound coins from the same mint in Delaware. They are Susan B Anthony . Did you get any info on them?
