Spot Price - The current market price for immediate sale of a precious metal, or any other commodity.

Melt Value - The value of precious metal in a coin, calculated by multiplying the weight of the metal within the coin by the market price of the metal.

[timsumrall: I have to disagree with you. If you showed the average Joe a silver dime and a 1 oz round they might still confuse the dime for a regular one. Most people, in my experience, just don't know the difference/]

Libertad, I don't think the "average Joe" would know what a 1 oz. round was either....I still hear people calling Ike's "silver dollars"

I'm hoarding rolls of silver halves. I think I have about 10 rolls socked away now.

P.S. People will quickly learn to tell silver from clad if and when the time comes.

During the 1979-80 precious metals boom, most of the action involved the public selling silver to dealers. It's going to be very different in the future. People will be waiting in line to buy, not sell. That means much higher premiums over melt.

yeah agree with maineman here.

on the other hand, maine, the lack of public knowledge of such things can be as much an advantage to you as a disadvantage; e.g. some may confuse an ike with silver. of course, that's not a very friendly thing to do to someone no matter what your situation.

and the bars I think a lot of people would be skeptical of accepting bc they won't know how to determine whether it's really silver.

When you put money in the bank they call it saving. Why when you put money into silver / gold do they call it hoarding? When you thing about it, isn't it the same?

yeah of course it's the same. but if you're looked at negatively--as a hoarder--then the fedgov. can more easily steal your savings like it did during the depression.

I'm not a hoarder I'm a collector that likes to have "A whole bunch" of silver coins & rounds on hand and I "LIKE" to watch the spot prices.

Speculation about the future isn't a fact. I'm betting these giant corps get a slap on the wrist and a hefty fine. Some other people will take their place and it'll happen again.
