Does anyone have the prices of these very interesting pieces from Prince Edward Island? The obverse of these pieces have the inscription,'SPEED THE PLOUGH' with a plough in the centre of the coin. The reverse of these pieces have the inscription,'SUCCESS TO THE FISHERIES' with a gutted fish in the centre of the coin.To work out the date of issue, the 1840 issues have a clevis on the plough,& the 1857 issues have a hook on the plough.(Note;Look to the right-hand side of the coin to find the clevis or hook.)

I have got one of the 1857 issue with the hook on the plough. There are also 2 sub-types as well, both differing in the tail on the gutted fish.

Aidan.

I think they are listed in Charlton's Canadian token catalogue.I know that they are listed in 'Coins of Canada'.I have a battered copy of the 3rd edition of that book.

Price depends on coinage or medal strike, coinage being more valuable.

Is that monkey pondering my post and wondering if I speak properly? Yeh, I don't KNOW much about PEI coins but I have my eye on a couple of 1871's. And Aidan, I saw a few examples of the plough coin on ebay...interesting coin.

According to Charlton 5th edition- the clevis issue is 1859, with variations in the fillet, tail, and lower fin, and the crossbar on the plough. VG$7, F$12, VF$30, EF$75, AU$200, UNC$400. The hook variety is 1860, medal VG$5, F$8, VF$18, EF$50, AU$125, UNC$300; and the coinage is VG$6, F$10, VF$22, EF$60, AU$120, UNC$350. Hook variety was struck by Ralph Heaton. Originally imported to PEI, then later to Newfoundland.
