Hi Guys:

Reposting this pair of pictures, in case anyone here recognizes and can ID this. It's an attractive piece, but I'm really confused about what it is, please help if you can, thanks! All I know at this point is that it's the Austrian Olympic Committee, and there's a notation of "1000" above the device in reverse center...

No, there isn't; look closely, and you'll see it's a repeat of the "OOC" abbreviation on the obverse.

They're winter sports, and Austria has hosted the Winter Olympics twice (Innsbruck, 1964 and 1976). I presume it was issued in connection with one of those events.

There's nothing inscribed on the rim?

Nope rim is smooth, no lettering of any sort or date. And I'm using a 16x loupe, it's definitely marked "1000", numbers not letters.

The three-letter abbreviation (it's "Ã-OC", by the way - Austrian Olympic Committee) can indeed be found twice on that medal. That combination of the Austrian eagle and the Olympic rings is still used by the committee, except they now use "Austria" instead of "Ã-OC", see http://www.oeoc.at/images/statisch/1/top_logo.gif. If there is a "1000" anywhere - maybe above the ice crystal, at the 12 o'clock position? - that would probably mean it is pure silver. This medal could have been issued on the occasion of some Winter Olympics, or maybe of an Ã-OC jubilee, don't know ...

Ahh very interesting! Do you know how long ago they switched over from the Ã-OC logo--which does feature in the center on both sides--to the new "Austria" one?

Sorry, no idea. But judging from this page http://flagspot.net/flags/at@oly.html I'd say some time after 2002. But why not ask the Ã-OC about the piece? See the first address here: http://www.olympia.at/main.asp?kat1=44&kat2=240

(Edit) Hm, seems the first link gets corrupted here. Try this one: (Offsite URL shortening not allowed) /32ub72c
