This coin was part of an inherited collection stretching from A.D. 270 Roman coins to the late-1800s, so it could be from anywhere between those dates and from any country. This one was not marked and I have no idea of the language. For all I know, my photo may be upside down. It appears to be bronze. Help?

This is a very early Islamic coin, circa 700-900 AD I believe. The script is Kufic, an archaic form of Arabic lettering, which even most modern Arabs have difficulty reading.

I'm away from my reference books right now, but I should be able to have an answer for you in a day or two, if no-one else has answered in the meanwhile.

Thank you so much! I will look forward to your input or anyone else who can shed light. So, does that mean that my photos were upside right?

Your pics are right way up. If that was a guess, it was a good guess.

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to narrow down the date of issue or issuer; the only words I've been able to read are generic words that appear on most coins, like "sultan" and "malik" (king).

It's very odd, in having primitive Kufic script but not the typical primitive legend, the verse from the Koran that's usually found on earlier coins. It may be from later than I first thought.
