I just cannot believe it. The dealer I had hand carry it to NGC at one show thought it was real, the guy at NGC thought it was real. Everyone thought it was real!!

Now, I am in need of assistance. Does anyone know of any colonial coin forums or where I might be able to find out about early reproductions/restrikes of the fugio? I read about the New Haven restrike, but those appeared to be primarily uncirculated. The patina is too good, the condition looks quite used.

I got it at an auction and found it in the bottom of a box of things I won. I wish NGC would give more details as to why they thought it was fake.

Mike

Hi Mike,
A friend asked for an opinion on a Washington Draped Bust, which triggered my memory of a thread somewhere so I googled 'colonial coin help' which brought me here, so while I am, let me try to assist you........I am unaware of any forums that are colonial specific, however, there could be several reasons why NGC shot down your coin......Could be weight, or metal content, but most likely it is because it doesn't match currently known die varieties.

There are 24 known obverse varieties of Fugio cents, and yours does not match any of them.....nor does the reverse die for that matter.........the letters and stars on Fugios were hand stamped onto the dies making each die unique.....For example, the trefoil in front of the F in the word Fugio is far closer on your coin than any of the 24 known obverses, and the placement of the letters in 'mind your business' is also different (among several other things)...... This is not to say that your coin is counterfeit, as it could be a rare new discovery that the TPG is unaware of.......If it becomes your mission to establish this coin as a new discovery, you cannot go running up that hill as is the case with a Morgan dollar, but with a coin as well established as a Fugio, you must crawl up that hill on your belly.....a good place to start might be with Jon Lusk.

If necessary, I could probably find some contact information for Eric Newman. He is one of the top experts on colonial currency and he created the attribution system for Fugios. He also happens to live in St Louis and has lifelong ties to my employer

There is a Yahoo group "colonial-coins" that is open to all where you could post this image and ask for feedback. I believe you would get interesting answers.
