This date has been bugging me for three months just sitting on my desk because something is protruding on the inside lower bend of the 2 digit of the date.

I am unsure if this is just a scratch or a die error.

Please ID what I have here including any possible $ value if applicable.

Thanks

Not an expert but I have seen this a lot on the 72's. Even on the D and S minted cents. I don't think it's anything but possible die wear. WOLF

'72's are tricky for us new guys because there was some doubling on a master die that got transferred to working dies.

You are seeing master die doubling, it is a true doubled die but not really collectible since about half of all 1972s have the same minor doubling. There are 12 DDOs listed for 1972, all of them do have value from a few dollars to a few hundred dollars.

i have seen this and other posts - referring to almost half/most or nearly all 72's having some form of master die doubling. with the exception of 2 true DD, and a very few Machine Doubling, I haven't found any with the common master die doubling. might be just my luck but almost none of the 72's I look at have this.

Does this particular coin has a ref. # associated with it? If so, please provide it if it easily obtainable.

Also being that it is not that collectible what sort of monetary value could one expect to get for this coin?

Not sure what you mean by reference number, but you might be able to get .03 from a copper hoarder.
