Hello,

I have been working a lot more with GIMP lately trying to improve coin cropping skills, and this is my best result yet. I know the pictures are crappy, but they are from my only digital camera I have. (Still need to buy a new one.)

Opinions and criticism welcome.

What things should I change on the image? Brightness, contrast, etc.

Thanks

The only thing I notice is it's a little out of focus. Do you use a tripod?

I have a very primitive camera. Check yours out, there could be some kind of anti-shaking hands feature. And it's better to stabilize your hands by a contact with a fixed object, like a wall or a desk top. Also when you do close-ups set it on "Macro" or "Super-Macro" if you have one (you should have at least "Macro").

The cropping looks nice! If only the image was a bit bigger ...

Invest in a tripod or a copy table. Also, if you try to crop a photo too much, it'll get blurry.

No, I just held the camera, and put the coin on my table.

Where would I find the "Macro" setting on my Camera?

It should be there, most likely in the form of a little flower icon. Nicely cropped, putting the obverse in front of the reverse should make it look a little better.

Is a "macro" fairly new? I think this camera is around 5 years old.

Update: I found my newer camera, and it has Macro mode

I tested out the newer camera's macro mode, and the pictures are still very blurry when taking close up photos. Does anyone know why thats happening?

A couple possibilities:

1) The camera is too close to the coin. Macro shooting distances vary between cameras; only a few will let you get closer than, say, 4 inches or so.

2) You're hand-holding the camera. Especially in Macro mode, you'll probably never get a focused shot holding the camera in your hand. I know one person who can do that, and it ain't me.

But I don't have a tripod.

I just placed the coin standing upright and took the picture.

Here are the pictures from my latest attempt (Using the new camera).

Basically just a point and shoot. I set the camera to macro mode, and turned off the flash.

OK, there's your basic night-and-day difference.

There is very darn little to argue with this set.
