I have been collecting since I was a kid but more seriously for the past 10 years. I am seriously working on a set of Morgan's, but I have been doing this for about7 years. I am about 2/3 done. They are all certified, Mostly PCGS AND NGC with a few ANACS and ICG. The vast majority are mint state and high AU. BUT, as time has gone on and the expense of the more rare dates is very difficult. I am waiting longer to save up for rare dates as well as finding coins that I like. I will by the coin and not the holder.
But Now the question......It is not that my interest is waning in the morgans.......I am not sure if I will ever finish the set. Would you keep going or now sell or consign some portion of the set to buy more rare coins or gold.

Tuff question since everyone has different goals, outlooks, time, interests, etc. Your really asking for people to tell you what to do and only you really know what you want, need, can do or use. Anytime you ask what to do and you try what someone else mentions, you take the risk of ending up doing something you really didn't or wouldn't have done otherwise. The good part of that is you can always say those lousy people told me all wrong.
Your now facing what happens to many, many people that start a hobby and really shouldn't have, maybe. This is why so many kids start something and loose interest with many hobbies. Coin collecting is a hobby and the only way I see to look at it is to just collect what YOU want, how many of those YOU want, keep what YOU want, sell what YOU want, etc.
You could just put them all away for a while, start something new, then see how YOU feel in a Month, Year or longer about those.
Or just send them all to me and forget about coins.

I have thought about this for a year and a half, but then all of sudden you are at a show, or see something on ebay and the date or the luster or the strike from a beautiful morgan just keeps me going back for more. I would still do what I want to do just looking for different perspective

I'm nearing the point with a number of the series I collect where the few remaining dates in each are exorbitantly expensive and I know I'll never get an example of them. That doesn't deter me from taking pride in the series such as I've been able to assemble, and I really don't sweat the impossible dates. Maybe when I'm a millionaire... ha ha
So when I get to this point I shift my collecting focus to other directions, even though I always keep an eye out for worthwhile upgrades to these favorite series. To each his own criteria for what constitute worthwhile upgrades: I personally don't bother if it's the difference between a 61 and a 63, or a 63 and a 64. AU to MS is a worthwhile jump, certainly.
Of course, with the Morgans, you're talking about very high prices for many key dates, and all the business of VAMs... It's really the coin collector's dream series, or nightmare series, depending on how you look at it, or perhaps even both at the same time. I can understand your occasional ambivalence about collecting Morgans, but look at it this way: would it be as rewarding a series to collect, if it weren't also so frustrating?

I agree with Carl..you have to make up your own mind on something like this...unless you're trying to pass the buck.

I feel kind of sorry for you since you even need to ask.
I would suggest focusing on something else and let the Morgans rest.
You probably have a great set but those holes can really get to you,
don't let them, cherish what you have instead.

Yes, while it is good not to worry about the economy (because there is nothing you can do about it on a personal level anyway), it is also good to be aware of it.....It seems that coin prices are sluggish right now (because of the economy)....so I might think that now would not be a good time to sell.

The type of problem your facing is common amonst almost all hobbies. Imagine someone that likes cars and always wants one of each. Due to size alone that becomes really difficult. Even if you collected fishing lures, and I know people that do, there is a never ending variety and amount out there and some you'll never find. Or what about the people that collect string, rubber bands, toothpicks, beer cans? They all have that problem of just how many can I have, how many can I afford, how many will fit into my house and on and on and on.
Hobbies are individualistic types of things that only YOU can decide what is next.
