I am new to the hobby and am looking to buy my first detector. Right now it is between the Ace 250, Whites M6, and Minelab Quattro (all used). I will be searching mainly wooded areas with the occaisional lake Michigan Shoreline. Money is not the issue here just dont want to get the wrong one. Thanks for all your help

a lot of people like the ace 250 I haven;t heard anything bad about it. I personally have the whites coin pro, which is like 20 bucks more than the ace. what I liked about the whites over the ace, was that the screen on the whites was larger. Also the whites model has sound identification, which after trying out the ace, I didn't like that it it did not have that feature. I would recommend buying sometime with the sound identification feature, it is very helpful imo..

Where abouts on Lake Michigan will you be hunting? If you're in my area when this white stuff melts I could let you try out the Ace250.

Hybes why don't you see if there is a place that will let you test drive one. See how you like them before you buy. If I were just starting out I don't know if I would be dropping 700 to 900 dollars on a machine. I would make sure I would continue in the hobby first. I have a buddy that bought a machine for just over 600 about 3 years ago and know it collects dust in the corner of his room. Used it like maybe 3 times. The couple of places that sell around here will let you trade up to a different detector if you want.

Where are you at HoosierDaddy? I grew up in Michigan City.

I would be mainly searching holland and grand haven. Right now I am leaning toward the whites, but the Minelab is intriuging. From the reviews it seems to find the deeper objects. Anyone have any experience with Minelab?

I've caught lots of bass feesh in your area...while checking out the bling on those beaches! You are in some fine dirt fishing/sand sifting areas! Good luck in your choice. But I would start out with a cheaper model then work your way up. This thing gets mighty frustrating at times. Metal detection is like fishing...fishing is not always catching....that's why we call it fishing! So some days you're gonna catch/find a whopper and some days it's going to be a guppy. Some days they ain't gonna bite no matter what! Good luck with the snow...you got plenty of time to make your decision!

Minelab all the way. Bought a topotheline Whites 3 years ago, buddy used ML, kicked my butt! I ended up buying his used ML. Just get used to the sound of "a 3-year old playing a flute". Almost 70 silver coins again this year, lots of IH's, silver rings, etc...and DEPTH that can't be beat!
When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN...so do my neighbors...
Roll hunting since '77
Dirt fishing since '72

One possible way of trying different models is to see if there is a metal detecting club near your home. Most clubs have a monthly outing, and I bet they would let you tag along.

Detectorists are a great bunch, and most all of them would let you try out their machines.

Whatever you choose, put in the time it takes to learn the machine. The most important thing to learn is to dig NEATLY if you are in a park or school lot (anywhere else, for that matter). Our hobby depends on this!

There are three topics guaranteed to start an argument: Politics, Religion, and 'My detector is better than yours'!
