Is this some sort of corrosion/contamination or just part of the normal toning? Held in hand, it look like normal toning. It's already been slabbed and graded but I'd be interested in your opinions. Thanks.

Yes that toning looks very normal for a Morgan dollar. Most likely that edge was exposed to a bit more air than the rest of the coin.

I don't believe the toning on this coin would give it a premium v/ a "blast white" dipped coin but it won't hold it back either.

PS: What did this grade? Looks to be at least MS-63

Looks like normal toning. We get so use to seeing blast white silver that been dipped that normal toning starts to look abnormal!

MS64 obverse.

Thanks guys. Good to hear it's just normal toning. Thought I might have had a problem needing attention.

Can you splain this to a newbie? Not quite sure what you mean.

Right on with the grading! PCGS put it at MS63.

Toners often fetch larger premiums (often huge if the toning is very attractive) than their blast white (or coins that lack toning or patina) counterparts, that are sometimes assumed to be dipped since many believe older coins should have some form of toning.

So what Fenton meant was that your coin wouldn't really carry a premium over another identical coin without the toning, but the toning wouldn't devalue the coin either, which I agree with.

Nice coin and eye appeal!
