Morning all! I am new to this forum so please bear with me. I have found a coin/token Joseph 11, dated 1767...I was just wondering if it is of any value atall... I say coin/token, because there is a small hole drilled through it which I imagine took a chain at one point. It is in quite good condition, on the front it reads "GEREXAA LO&.M.H.D JOSEPH 11", This goes around the coin. Joseph is centred within a square and the bottom is a 3 then the hole. On the back of the coin, there is what we would call a coat of arms, with an A stamped inside it, and around the coin it reads " VIRTUE, ET, EXEMPLE, 1767". So that's it... I can take some pictures but any information would be appreciated. Many thansk....Julie

Hi Julie, A picture would certainly help. Joseph II was the Holy Roman Emperor, 1765-90. My guess is the coin, if silver, is a 3 kreuzer.

I'm going to need a pic for this one; While Joseph II may have been Holy Roman Emperor, most of the coins issued in territory under direct Imperial control (such as Austria) were issued in the name of his mother, Maria Theresa.

The "3" at the bottom indicates a 3 kreuzer (or 3-somethings) denomination is likely. Can you tell us what metal thecoi is made from (bronze, silver, gold, brass, etc).

Hi Julie and SAP,

Here's a picture of a 20 kreuzer from Bohemia for your consideration.

Meldercat, that's actually an Austrian coin; Bohemian coins always have the lion of Bohemia in the shield.

But looking that coin up in Krause has led me to a likely candidate: the Austrian 30 kreuzer, KM# 2071 - if we interpret "...and the bottom is a 3 then the hole..." as meaning the hole happens to line up where the "0" in "30" should be.

Scroll down to the second last coin on this page to see it.

Hi Sap, Thanks for the correction. I should have known better as I have a Joseph II 1790 Austrian 1 Kreuzer. I also have a few Bohemian 14th and 15th century pieces. Thanks again. It's amazing what you can find without the picture but a group dedicated numismatics. Well Julie ... I hope we could help!
