Hi all. I have just had some time over the Christmas/New Years break to get back to searching through some coin. I focused on 20c and 50c pieces which my bank/s kindly gave to me. I am lacking a few coins in particular federation so I thought I'd try to hunt some down while still searching for other goodies . However, I found all types very hard to find, especially federation 20c coins. Has anybody else found this? What common coin/s is everybody searching for and can't find? (I assume there are a few who haven't found the rarer coins as well like mules, incused flags, wavy 2's etc but everybody has trouble finding them!) Edited by b_j_w_79 01/04/2011 7:14 pm

They are not as common as they where. I think it is because they have been hoarded. Let me know which ones you are missing as I am one of those hoarders

To give some idea of some of the coins found for the amount searched. 20c searched $2240 1971 25 UN 5 Brad 9 ACT 1 NI 4 NSW 4 NT 1 (very bad condition) QLD 0 SA 5 TAS 5 VIC 7 WA 6 Vol 30 2004 LH 3 50c searched $2400 1973 20 1985 4 (very happy) Tall 6 1990 1 (very happy) Ram 1 1993 5 ACT 0 NI 4 NSW 7 NT 6 QLD 3 SA 4 TAS 2 VIC 8 WA 3 Hence, the coins that I had trouble finding and will have to keep noodling for are 20c Qld, NT and ACT. As for 50c, ACT are needed. As well as incused flags and wavy 2's (no I didn't find any )

I am still coming across state 50 cent coins but the 20cent coins are drying up.
I must admit I dont get a lot of time to noodle very much so this could be my problem.

I have the complete set of the 20's and 50's. No big deal; I cheated. I bought them as a single lot from a dealer.
The RAM issued a complete boxed silver proof set of the 20's and 50's. Mine are only the base metal uncirculated ones.

Seen this topic and thought I'd brag!
One of the joys of my coin collection is a complete set of the 3 x Proof Coins (1 for each state). They are such lovely sets - Funnily enough, the tricky ones to track down were QLD and ACT! NSW and VIC being the most common-

Used to see a lot of federation commems in circulation, but very few these days.
I collect one example of every non definitive design that I come across, from circulation. Over the years, it is possible to build a very interesting collection with face value coins. Even kids can do this, at no cost to themselves, because it is easy to get mum or dad to pay for them.

They are all still there for the finding. But, the more sought after ones are getting harder and harder to find. Why? Because all of you keep taking them from circulation. Now, instead of having to search hundreds of dollars to find a ramshead, 1985 50¢ or make a set of Centenary of Federation (20¢ or 50¢), you have to go through a few thousand dollars of change bags. Time consuming exercise; maybe it is just easier to do an ebay search and buy some. Jeff
