I am somewhat new but I am trying to gather some more information.

I am trying to complete my Franklin half dollar set and I was trying to see if anyone could help answer a few questions.

I have almost collected every Franklin from 1948-1963 P/D/S in dates available. I have found conflicting information on Proof for the Franklins. I have seen that there are only 11 Proofs in the series but in other articles I have seen that Proofs were available in every year. Does someone know for sure?

Also what is the difference between Proof and Silver Proof (other than Silver and Clad)? Were both available for every year also or just certain years?

Any information would be extremely helpful in learning more knowledge about this series

thanks

Franklin proofs were minted 1950-1963 so only 1948 and 1949 did not have proofs minted. The early 1950s proofs tend to be quite expensive due to low mintages.

That is irrelevant for this series as all Franklin half dollars are 90% silver. The last 90% silver proofs were minted in 1964 and were not minted again until 1992, all years between those two dates were clad. Since 1992, proof sets have been available in standard CuNi clad and 90% silver.

I believe that there are fourteen proof issues, which corresponds to the years listed by Bio.

One other question:

What is the best way to tell a Proof from a regular UC half dollar from a picture? I am not sure there is an easy way. I do know the finish is a sure sign but I am still not an expert so would like some advice
