Hi there! New to the forum. I found some old coins, and this one just caught my eye times a million. After a few hours researching and such, I've found out that it's an Athenian Owl Tetradrachms, however, it doesn't look like any of the photos I've seen. It's worn, and even a nick in the side. I want to go get it appraised, just to see if it's worth anything, but my mom says not to waste my time. Can I get some opinions? Sorry for the horrible images. (:

Definitely an owl but something about it just doesn't feel right to my eyes. Might just be the picture. If it's legit it would be worth several hundred. You should show it to a local dealer and get their opinion. They would probably be willing to share some information and help determine authenticity for free.

I'm sure some can comment better on details. Most of the Athenian owls I've seen show testing marks on the owl

It looks like a replica for the tourist trade to me.

I have a genuine one which I bought at auction many years ago.

Ya,if its authentic it be about 800-1200 possibly.I say its a copy from seeing the owl side(along the edge)and the chip looks funny on the other side.If its real, its actually in quite nice condition

Thanks for everyone's opinions! I honestly just couldn't tell. I'm definitely going to take it to get looked at by a professional, however, I live in a decently rural area outside of Houston, which means an hour to an hour and a half drive to a shop that has anyone that specializes in ancient coins. I'd tried to do as much research as I could before posting here. I'd looked into the possiblity of it being a counterfeit, which if it is, I'll totally make it somekind of jewlery piece. But none of the other counterfeit examples looked anything like it!

Modern replica sold by New York City's Metropolitan Museum of Art gift shop in large numbers in the 1950s and 1960s. If you weigh it, it'll be less than the correct range of 16.5 to 17.2 grams or thereabouts, likely less than 10 grams. It's silver-plated brass rather than pure silver. All of these have the same center dimple on the obverse and the dame edge cut at 8 o'clock on the obverse and 6 o'clock on the reverse. Worth about $20/$25.
