Hi, I'm a novice, so pardon the possibly dumb question and the poor photograph. I have an 1850-something large cent. The final number is mostly worn off, but it looks like the top of a 3, but it's quite a ways away from the 5. Is this just probably a too-worn 1853 or is there an error variety that moved the 3 (or whatever the number is) too far to the right? Thanks in advance!

I'm no pro, but it looks like you just have a worn down cent from the pictures.

I think you are a the wrong end of the cents. From what I see you have a cent from the 1816 - 1819 period. The end of Liberty's bust stopped being that shape in 1834 and the extremely wide space between the 1 and 8 tells me it is from early in the middle date series. Pictures of the whole coin might let me narrow it down more.

I concur with Conder, definitely not an 1850 something coin since it is not even a Braided Hair type.

Conder101 is right on with this. When the coin obverse bust changed from 1814 to 1816 the lower curl below the bust lengthened. Here's a picture of an 1816. The 3rd digit of your date (which kind of looks like a 5) I think is the top if the 1.

What do you think?
