After just figuring out how to take great pictures (in my opinion) using the Canon SD1000 IS, I dropped it while it was turning on and it landed right on the lens. Now it will start, but the lens will not even move then it will just turn back off after displaying the error message.

Error: "Lens Error, Restart Camera"

I have restarted the camera many times, and it still doest work. I can't remember if I got the camera last year or the year before. If it was last year then it can be repaired. If it was two years ago, then it will be $99.00 not including the 13% tax and shipping costs... (It would be cheaper just to buy a new one.)

I am wondering if anyone here has ever had this problem with this camera, or a similar one.

Thanks

I had a bad experience when my Nikon dSLR toppled over while attached to a tripod, bouncing of the wall.
The digital cameras are much more fussy than my old film cameras. I didn't bother getting an older model fixed.

If you're considering a replacement, you might check out the Canon SD780IS. They're great cameras for coins, and the price makes it a great backup if you later get a higher-end model.

Thanks DVCollector. I was actually looking at that camera, as a replacement.

I am going to keep looking to see if I can find the receipt for my SD100 IS. If I got it in the past year it can be repaired for free

I had a Canon, I believe it was a 790 as well that my kids broke after 6 months. Same error on the lens. I ended up letting it sit and about a year later I got an email from Canon that I could turn in my old/broken camera and get a deal on a refurbed one. I ended up getting a Canon 890is, 10mp point and shoot for $150. This was about 2 years ago. Not a bad deal. That is the camera I use now to take my coin photos. I get some really nice shots with it in macro mode w/no flash. Best shots come when I do it in teh day time near a door with plenty of non-direct sunlight.

Update: I dropped this camera off at a local camera shop, so that they can fix it.
